About The Role

The IT Systems engineer technician apprentice will assist in assembling, installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting traffic enforcement technology hardware and software, including associated infrastructure, ensuring they operate efficiently and safely. You will develop practical skills in networking, software development, system management, electronic fault diagnosis, and compliance with UK regulations. This work directly supports Verra Mobility’s mission to enhance road safety and smart mobility, ensuring reliable and compliant solutions for our valued clients.

Training to be provided:  

Level 3 IT Support Technician Apprenticeship Standard. You will complete a 22-month apprenticeship which includes 25 days at the PETA training centre in Cosham. You will be supported every 6-8 weeks with visits from your PETA Learning & Development Coach. 
 
About the role: 

The IT Systems engineer technician apprentice will be responsible for the following duties:  

Be a collaborative, active and positive member of the Government Solutions team who operates in alignment with Verra Mobility’s Values 
 
Systems & Software Management: 
 
  • Installation, maintenance and development of operational IT systems, including IT network infrastructures, physical servers, virtual servers, data centre equipment and cloud systems 
  • Support and development of ServiceNow fault and customer management system 
  • Access controls updated for operational IT systems 
  • Assist in assembling, wiring and troubleshooting various electrical/electronic issues across a diverse array of equipment 
  • Perform periodic maintenance  
  • Conduct comprehensive and accurate testing 
  • Work with low-voltage and DC power systems in associated road safety technology 
  • Invocation of Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) actions and follow up reporting, as required 
Troubleshooting & Fault Diagnosis: 
 
  • Learn skills associated with core networking and server administration  
  • Dive deep into the management of networks, exploring network hardware and software, network services and routing protocols 
  • Learn to use multimeters, oscilloscopes, and electrical testing tools to diagnose faults 
  • Assist in troubleshooting connectivity issues in network enabled traffic devices 
  • Support repairs and upgrades to power distribution and control systems 
Compliance & Safety: 
 
  • Follow UK electrical safety standards (BS 7671 Wiring Regulations, IET guidelines)
  • Ensure all work meets ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environmental), ISO 45001 (Health & Safety) , Cyber Essentials, and ISO 27001 (Security Management) standards 
  • Ensure software and systems are managed in accordance with HOTA (Home Office Type Approval) and other client required standards 

Technical Documentation & Reporting:

  • Read and interpret network diagrams, test plans, electronic schematics, blueprints, and wiring diagrams
  • Maintain accurate logs of maintenance work using asset management systems 
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to engineers and supervisors
  • Review/update of Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) Plans, based on testing and system changes

 Essential Skills:

It is essential that the IT Systems engineer technician apprentice has the following skills and personal qualities: 

  • GCSEs in maths and English with at least a grade C/4
  • Demonstrated passion for technology including electronic componentry, networking and computer software 
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills 
  • Good understanding of IT, networking, software and operating systems, logic and problem solving and scripting 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite 
  • Well-developed verbal, listening, comprehension and written communication skills 
A full UK driving licence is essential for being able to attend the office and training facilities. 
Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check will be required to be successful.
