Machining Apprentice Oliver shares his experiences of a PETA engineering apprenticeship

Oliver is currently completing his Level 3 Engineering Technician apprenticeship, following the machining pathway. Oliver works for Havant Sheet Metal as a Machinist.

Havant Sheet Metal is a fine limit sheet metal company a based in Havant.

We met with Oliver to find out his thoughts and opinions on his apprenticeship so far:

What led you to start your apprenticeship?

I have always had an interest in engineering and manufacturing, having had the chance to study it when I was at college. After spending a number of years working in different industries, I reflected on where I wanted my career to go and knew my real passion was for mechanical engineering. The apprenticeship offered the perfect opportunity to be hands on and learn a trade whilst earning.

What would a typical day for you be?

As a Machinist, I am required to have multiple skill sets. A typical day for me would be to drill, tap and countersink using manual machines.

Tell us about your experience as an apprentice…

Whilst my apprenticeship has been challenging, I feel like it has pushed me to succeed and be the best I can be. The apprenticeship has been a steep learning curve but with the support of my employer and training provider, I am progressing well and continuing to develop my skills.

What do you enjoy most about doing an apprenticeship?

Having started with a really limited skill set, I have enjoyed learning new technical skills. Now I thrive when I am challenged by my team leader to complete new tasks. My confidence and abilities have definitely grown as a result!

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Once I have completed my Apprenticeship, I want to continue learning. I’d like the opportunity to go on to study for a HNC and then a HND.

What is the best bit of advice you could give to someone who is considering an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a fantastic learning opportunity. To make the most of it, you need to be organised and take the chance to learn as much as possible from the Instructors, your Learning and Development Coach and your employer.
