What led you to start your apprenticeship?
I wanted the opportunity to continue my education but in a different way. The apprenticeship offered the perfect chance to learn a whole host of new skills whilst having the opportunity to apply them in the workplace. Being able to put my skills into practice has enabled me to feel more confident and competent in my job role.
What would a typical day for you be?
As an Education Support Technician, my role is based within a school. My job role is varied but a typical day would involve making sure that the school network is running smoothly and providing technical support to teachers to ensure they can effectively use the IT systems to support teaching. This could involve changing out old equipment and supporting students / teachers if anyone has issues when using the IT equipment.
Tell us about your experience as an apprentice…
I have loved my apprenticeship experience. I like all the learning at PETA alongside all the teachings from my mentor and the level of support has been great. Having so much support from PETA and my employer has made my apprenticeship journey stress free.
What do you enjoy most about doing an apprenticeship?
The apprenticeship has given me the chance to develop a well-rounded knowledge of IT. The detailed training has helped me feel confident in my role. Whilst some of the skills I have learnt aren’t applicable to my current job role, they will support me as I develop within the IT industry.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
I would like to work towards more qualifications and start working towards becoming a specialist in an area of IT. I’d like the chance to develop my skills further and have the opportunity to share my knowledge with others too.
What is the best bit of advice you could give to someone who is considering an apprenticeship?
Do it! You will learn so much and the best bit is that you have the chance to put your new skills into practice in the workplace. This means you can quickly see the benefits of the training and see yourself progress! You also get paid to learn.
